If you sell products specifically marketed as offensive, you live with the fact that any press can be good press. Recently had an adventure on Etsy. Decided to put some of my products on that artist website to see how well they would sell. Placed them online in October and waited. And waited. A couple months go by with zero activity whatsoever. That all changed with a couple angry emails. After having the congratulations series on my site for over a year, people on Etsy found it and started getting upset. First with the Down Syndrome card, mothers and people associated with Down Syndrome started emailing me in bulk.

Followed closely by people upset about the bad touch card, and then it took off from there to encompass most in that collection. I was eventually getting close to 100 emails a day and showing up on blogs around the internet, some in favor of the material and some not in favor.

This all culminated in a feature on CNN’s Headline News (watch the feature here). After the feature hit the air, I watched the stats skyrocket. Over 10,000 unique visitors on that day alone. Bad press? SAYS WHO? From the slew of supporting emails coming into my box for the next day, it’s fair to say that even though lots of people may not agree with how I’ve covered some of these issues, lots of other people still find them funny and are supporting that decision by purchasing.
